Customer: Stevens & Carlotti (Sandwich, Kent, UK)
Product: XMS based seam welder
Process: MIG
Sector: Industrial

Stevens and Carlotti in Sandwich, Kent UK received this 1200mm
capacity seamwelder with XMS control and MIG/MAG process.

AMET XMS standalone package was used for the seamwelder linear
carriage movement. Miller XMT 356 inverter type MIG/MAG welding
package was used, working in dip transfer mode. A robotic type Tregaskiss
Toughgun completed the package.

System Features:

  • Pneumatic air slide for torch up/down
  • Miller XMT 356 inverter MIG/MAG welding equipment package
  • Tregaskiss robotic machine type air cooled MIG torch
  • Programmable encoder weld length
  • 0-9 programme storage

The system was designed so the operator could load the part and with the
press of one button, run an automatic weld sequence.

The system was controlled by AMET's latest XMS type digital carriage
drive module, which was supplied complete with an operators hand pendant.
This XMS module features DSP (Digital Signal Processor) technology to
control the weld sequence and provides sequence start/stop, variable delays
for carriage start/stop, programmable carriage speed, lower and raise the
torch to weld position at the start and end of the weld, and fast return to the
start position ready for the next weld cycle. The XMS also sends start and stop
signals to the MIG power source.
When the system is initiated, the MIG torch is pneumatically lowered to the start
position (PLT-4 mechanism fitted), and a signal is sent to the power source to
start. Once the weld is initiated, the motorized carriage traverses the weld joint
for the programmed weld length, as set at the XMS pendant. The system featured
encoder based weld length control. At the end of the weld, the carriage
automatically stops, the arc extinguishes and the torch automatically lifts away
from the weld and returns to the home/starting position.
